There is a ‘new’ coaching paradigm that is making its way into the tennis coaching world. It is called ‘Ecological Dynamics’ and no, it is not about coaches protecting the environment, but rather, an alternative way to view how skills are acquired and performed.
It is well-researched and evidence-based, and because it was born out of this world, it comes with a different (and sometimes challenging) terminology. It also challenges many of the common coaching practices we may be used to.
Here is an introductory article that outlines some of the terminology, key elements and coaching implications of this view. Here is the conclusion of the article to hopefully inspire you to read it:
“Ecological dynamics offers a holistic, athlete-centred approach to tennis coaching that prioritizes adaptability, creativity, and real-world performance. By embracing representative practice, manipulating constraints, and valuing the unique interaction between each player and their environment, coaches can develop tennis players who are not just technically sound but tactically astute and resilient. As the sport continues to evolve, ecological dynamics provides a robust framework for meeting the dynamic demands of modern tennis, nurturing athletes equipped for both the challenges of the game and the joy of lifelong learning.”
